No loss of life in Solomons ferry sinking

10:22 am on 22 July 2005

Rescuers in Solomon Islands have picked up the crew of a passenger ferry which sank yesterday.

The senior marine officer at search and rescue, Brian Aonima, says the 60 people on board the MV Liofai were rescued 16 kilometres from West Marou Bay off Makira and no injuries are reported.

Mr Aonima says two banana boats were organised to pick up passengers before the ship went down.

The crew took to liferafts and were picked up late last night.

Mr Aonima says the MV Liofai was travelling to Honiara when it had an engine problem, started drifting, and then took on water.
