Police in the Papua New Guinea capital have charged a man for opening fire with a pistol outside the campus at the University of PNG.

Information of the shooting incident in Port Moresby on Tuesday night comes as students are being called back to classes after a week of protests.

Assistant police commissioner Tony Wagambie says the gunman's not a student and not linked to those suspected of stoking the unrest.

"Jeffrey Wafi has been arrested and charged for firearms offences. Like one charge for intoxicating liquor and being in possession of a firearm. One for discharging a firearm in public, and one for being unlicensed to carry the firearm."

Assistant commissioner Wagambie says detectives are studying files received from the university administration, including photographs of students suspected of burning the vice-chancellor's car last week.
