Vanuatu President removes head of police force

3:09 pm on 12 July 2005

Vanuatu's President, Kalkot Mataskelekele, has officially removed Robert Diniro as the country's commissioner of police.

Mr Diniro was suspended in September 2004 following events surrounding the attempted arrest of former prime minister, Serge Vohor.

The president issued the removal letter on the advice of the Police Service Commission.

The Minister for Police, George Wells has appealed to the president to appoint a new commissioner.

Mr Wells says there are outstanding cases and matters in relation to Vanuatu Police Force, so they want to have a permanent commissioner in the office immediately.

He says the Police Service Commission has provided recommendations to the office of the President, but nothing positive has been done so far.

The office of the Head of State had no comment to make on the issue.
