Jakarta names new ambassador to Canberra

A senior Indonesian diplomat, who has accused some Australian aid groups of fuelling separatist sentiment in Papua province, has been nominated as Jakarta's new ambassador to Australia.

Hamzah Thayeb, - a career diplomat - is currently director of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at Indonesia's Foreign Ministry.

While he is seen as generally sympathetic towards Canberra, Mr Thayeb in March criticised Australia for not doing enough to rein in Australian-based aid groups in Papua whom he accused of supporting separatist groups.

At the time he said there is information that certain NGOs operating in Indonesia, and funded by the Australian government, are doing these sorts of activities.
