The French minister in charge of overseas territories, Francois Baroin, has expressed his determination to introduce the euro in the French Pacific.

Mr Baroin made the suggestion in an interview with the French daily, Le Figaro.

He says it is an economic necessity that he will discuss with the territorial assemblies in New Caledonia and French Polynesia.

The euro is to replace the Colonial French Pacific Franc which was first introduced on Christmas Day 1945.
