United States makes strongest warning to Fiji yet

7:16 am on 11 June 2005

The United States ambassador to Fiji has delivered a blunt warning to the country's political leaders to end their confrontation.

In his most outspoken comments yet, David Lyon says public discussion by well-known political leaders about another coup isn't only discouraging but downright harmful.

Mr Lyon says he feels strongly enough about this, to cast aside diplomatic discretion, to call coup-mongering a threat to Fiji, and downright despicable.

He says he has had more problems answering questions about political stability in Fiji in the last few months than at any time since he came to Suva in 2003.

Mr Lyon says for the sake of democracy and the prosperity of all Fiji's people, its leaders must end confrontation and replace it with meaningful dialogue.
