American Samoa governor urged to block opening of Samoa consulate

7:16 am on 11 June 2005

A senator in American Samoa, Alo Stevenson, is urging the governor to block the opening of a Samoa consulate in the territory.

Alo says American Samoa mustn't allow Samoa to open the office unless it removes travel requirements which he says target American Samoans.

The Ituau senator is urging the governor to put a hold on the Samoa office, until he can introduce a resolution opposing it, when the Fono resumes next month.

But officials in Samoa's prime minister's department hope their consulate in American Samoa will start operating before the end of this month.
