Australian minister canvasses support from Pacific Islands on whaling ban

Australia's Environment Minister, Ian Campbell, has visited Tonga on the last leg of a tour to convince Pacific Island nations to back a ban on commercial whaling.

Senator Campbell's visit to Nuku'alofa comes after brief calls in to Solomon Islands and Kiribati.

The International Whaling Commission meets in South Korea starting later this month, and new members of the organisation are being asked to take up positions on the resumption of commercial whaling.

Tonga isn't a member of the commission but Australia is asking for its support for a Pacific whale sanctuary.
