A prominent Papua New Guinea woman politician has ruled herself out of the position of deputy prime minister.

Dame Carol Kidu told the newspaper, The National, that she has decided to stay clear of the post because of the intricacies of politics.

Dame Carol, who is the community development minister, says she is embarrassed by public comments that she was the right candidate.

The post has been vacant for a year.

Last month, the prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, said he would make an appointment but has failed to do so.
