Tonga budget to address youth unemployment and crime rate

6:47 pm on 1 June 2005

Tonga's finance minister, Siosiua 'Utoikamanu, says the education ministry will get more money in a bid to deal with youth unemployment and rising crime rates.

Mr Utoikamanu says it's important to approach the problem from all angles to ensure young people receive the necessary support to equip them for the job-market.

The minister says the plan is to offer industry specific training programmes for school leavers.

Mr Utoikamanu says the number of crimes being reported has climbed considerably over the last two years, especially domestic violence.

He says any form of domestic violence is unacceptable so the government will give more money to the authorities to deal with the problem.
