A New Caledonian member of the French parliament, Pierre Frogier, has announced that the president of his UMP Party in France, Nicolas Sarkozy, will be in Noumea in July.

Mr Frogier says Mr Sarkozy will attend the UMP Congress on July the 2nd when it is expected to choose a successor to the local party leader, Jacques Lafleur.

This comes a year after the UMP lost power in New Caledonia, with party dissidents forming the Future Together Party that won key positions after the last election.

The Future Together party is also expected to hold its Congress during Mr Sarkozy's visit.
