Fiji PM attacks WTO policies

8:26 am on 13 May 2005

Fiji's prime minister has attacked the World Trade Organisation describing its policies as unrealistic.

Laisenia Qarase was speaking at a conference of the Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific.

The Daily Post reports Mr Qarase as saying these unrealistic policies have created a crisis in Fiji's garment industry with over 15,000 workers, mainly women, being adversely affected.

He says the forces of globalisation are unrelenting in creating a new economic landscape which often creates extra burdens for the disadvantaged.

Aside from garments, Fiji's sugar industry is in dire straits because of WTO policies.
