Niue's Talagi wants finance post again

2:41 pm on 9 May 2005

The former Finance Minister of Niue, Toke Talagi, says he wants his post back after being returned to the Legislative Assembly once his name was drawn from a hat.

Provisional results indicated Mr Talagi had lost his common roll seat by two votes however a recount left both candidates tied.

The final result was decided when a senior official at the justice department drew a name from a hat.

Mr Talagi says he has definite goals for this term.

"I think I've done sufficient and demonstrated sufficient, that should enable me to retain my position in cabinet, whether as minister of finance or some other portfolio. I certainly would like to retain finance because I believe I have done a number of things in there that has helped with the long-term prospects of this country to become more self-sufficient and stable."

Mr Talagi says he has always supported Young Vivian as premier although he has suggested he has to get into cabinet before he can support him.
