Media reports from French Polynesia say the French ambassador to the UN in New York was asked to help secure the release of three members of a Tahiti delegation involved in a drugs incident.

The Tahitipresse news agency reports that three members of the delegation sent to promote a new direct flight between New York and Tahiti were detained for consuming hard drugs.

But, after reportedly paying bail, the three were released to fly back to Papeete.

The reports say they were let go after the intervention of the visiting French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, and French diplomats in New York.
