Preparations under way for American Samoa's Flag Day celebrations

10:22 am on 15 April 2005

Invited groups from Samoa have begun to arrive in American Samoa in preparation for Flag Day celebrations.

Four performing groups involved in the festivities have begun crossing from Samoa.

"Our correspondent in Pago Pago, Monica Miller, says as well as raising the flag, there will be performances from different nationalities, parades and Fautasi or longboat racing."

And she says this year, Samoans have composed songs about some of the new travel requirements introduced recently.

Songs that have been composed for the celebrations always take a dig at government officials, they always point to people who have been reported in the news about doing things that they're not supposed to, but I believe this year because of all the controversy surrounding immigration requirements I believe the visiting group from Samoa will no doubt make their opinions known.

American Samoa's national holiday celebrations take place next week to commemorate the first raising of the US flag on April 17, 1900.
