The Papua New Guinea disaster management office is checking for reports of casualties or damage, after a strong undersea earthquake early this morning.

The Hong Kong Observatory estimates the quake reached 6.5 on the Richter Scale, at about 1430 UTC this morning.

Its epicentre was in the sea north of Papua New Guinea, about 590km east-southeast of Jayapura, a town in Indonesia's Papua province.

The duty officer at the PNG disaster management office says he's received no reports of a tsunami, but officials are checking with police stations in Madang province.
