Solomons assistance mission police ask Malaitans to turn over fugitive

Assistance mission police in Solomon Islands have asked church leaders on Malaita to convince people there, to turn in a suspected killer who they say is living amongst them.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports Edmond Sae escaped from police custody, and is wanted by police in connection to the murder of the former Police Commissioner and Peace Councillor, Sir Frederick Soaki, in February 2003.

The commander of the assistance mission police force, Sandy Peisley, says police won't wait forever for Sae to come forward voluntarily, although she adds this is the preferred option.

The commander says Sae is being given food, water and shelter by people on the island.
