University staff in PNG back on the job after agreeing to arbitration

Staff at the University of Papua New Guinea are back teaching from today after agreeing to arbitration in a pay dispute.

More than 300 staff at the UPNG's two campuses this week withdrew labour and demanded that the university's senior management resign because of their failure to pay a wage rise given last year to other state servants.

The university council initiated court action over what it deemed an illegal strike, but this was put on hold for two weeks yesterday after both parties agreed to try arbitration.
