Nominations for French Polynesia's presidential election about to close

9:05 pm on 23 February 2005

Nominations close in French Polynesia on Thursday night for candidates for next week's presidential elections.

The Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party of Gaston Flosse says it will put forward a candidate for the election which has been prompted by last weekend's ousting of his government.

The Union For Democracy is expected to formalise its choice and name Oscar Temaru as candidate.

The Alliance For A New Democracy's Nicole Bouteau says it won't name anyone after failing to win more than two seats in the assembly.

The election will be held on February the 28th if at least 35 of the 57 members are present.

If there is no quorum the election will be held on March the 3rd.
