A tourism consultant in the Cook Islands, Dr Peter Philips, is touring the country in a bid to acquire public support for a new national tourism strategy.

The so-called Geotourism masterplan, focusses on culture rather than sun and sand.

During the series of public consultations, the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation is set to decide whether or not to give the plan official backing.

The chief executive of the Cooks Tourism Corporation, Chris Wong, says geotourism simply reinforces local culture.

"The Geotourist does not exclude people staying in five star resorts. It covers the full spectrum of accommodation type, but the emphasis is more on the experience of the person while he's at the destination. We want to encourage greater interaction, that they would be able to experience Cook Island lifestyle."
