US military disregards environment, say anti-nuclear group

The Fiji-based secretariat for the Nuclear Free Pacific movement is calling on Pacific leaders to unite against nuclear testing and waste.

The secretariat is the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre, says they were alarmed at the US nuclear submarine accident near Guam last weekend.

PCRC's Ema Tagicakibau, says they're concerned about the US military's constant disregard for the safety of people and the environment.

"The Pacific Island forum leaders have expressed their need or their vision for the Pacific to be a vision of peace. And we can't realise that vision until we ban all nuclear testing, nuclear weapons, trans-shipment, and even the use of Pacific islands as military bases."

Ema Tagicakibau says its time for Pacific leaders to support the call to remove all nuclear sites from the region.
