The Australian Government is providing more than US$45,000 to the Solomon Islands National Council of Women to increase women's participation in political governance ahead of the 2006 elections.

The funds are being provided under Australia's Human Rights Small Grants Scheme.

The council will use the funds to raise the awareness of women on the political and governance systems and their rights to vote in the upcoming national election through voter education.

The council's president, Sarah Dyer, says they aim to ensure that at least 90 per cent of women voters would cast their ballot in 2006.
