Thousands expected to farewell Australian police officer

Thousands of Australians are expected to line the streets of Canberra for the funeral of the police officer shot dead in Solomon Islands.

Adam Dunning, who was shot as he patrolled the streets of the Solomon Islands' capital, Honiara, last week, will be given an official funeral this evening at the Royal Military College chapel at Duntroon.

His family want people to honour Officer Dunning by lining Anzac Parade, which is lined by a series of war memorials including the Australian War Memorial, as his cortege passes by.

A Solomon Islands man who handed himself in on Christmas Eve, John Hen Ome, 31, has been charged with one count of murder and with attempted murder in relation to another officer who was in the vehicle with Officer Dunning.

Another man, James Tatau, is still wanted for questioning over this incident and an attack on a regional assistance mission police officer in October.
