Fiji awaiting outcome of vice-presidential selection

Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs will vote this afternoon on President Iloilo's nomination of Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi to be the next vice president.

Radio Legend reports that when the Great Council began its special meeting in Suva this morning, its chairman, Ratu Ovini Bokini announced that the president had nominated Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi.

The meeting then adjourned to chiefs from various indigenous confederacies in Fiji could discuss Ratu Joni's name among themselves.

The appointment of a vice president is the only item on the agenda.

The vote is expected this afternoon.

Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi is a former High Court judge who resigned in protest at the Speight coup.

He is a nephew of the esteemed Fijian chief, the late Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, and holds the title of Roko Tui Bau.
