PNG PM orders reinstatement of Telikom board

2:22 pm on 13 December 2004

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, has asked the Minister for State Enterprises and Information, Dr Puka Temu, to reinstate the sacked Telikom Board.

Sir Michael has also instructed that Martin Veisame be reinstated as the Acting Managing Director of Telikom.

The Telikom Board led by Dr Florian Gubon was sacked earlier this month by Dr Temu for failing to comply with Government directives relating to the sale of Telikom to the Econet-Altech consortium

The National newspaper reports that the Prime Minister's intervention came after he received letters from the PNG Communications Workers' Union calling for the reinstatement of the sacked Telikom board.

Although Dr Temu agreed to reinstate the board, this will not happen immediately.

Dr Temu says that because of court action taken by the board seeking to stay their terminations, he will await the court's decision before taking any action.

The Board's challenge on the sale of Telikom to Econet will be heard by the National Court today.

Meanwhile, Sir Michael says cabinet will deliberate on the sale of Telikom early this week, and has urged the unions not to take any strike action.
