Fiji's SVT calls for Iloilo's removal

The Fijian Political Party, the SVT, is calling for the removal of the president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

The Fiji Sun quotes the SVT spokesperson, Ema Druavesi, as saying President Iloilo is caught in a political tug-of-war between the government and the military, and his removal would be in the interest of national stability.

Ms Drauvesi says the government's only purpose for the president is to politically manipulate him in his old age.

She says the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, should convene a medical board to review President Iloilo's health because of his frequent trips overseas for medical treatment.

Fiji's constitution allows for the removal of the president and the vice president for inability to perform the functions of the office through a series of well-defined procedures.
