Fiji PM concerned by military commander's remarks

2:25 pm on 9 December 2004

Fiji's prime minister has expressed serious concern at recent public statements made by the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Laisenia Qarase has told Radio Legend the statements are not good for Fiji or his government.

Mr Qarase says the military can always go through the home affairs minister, Joketani Cokanasiga, to air its views to the government.

He says it is unfortunate that unnecessary comments are being made through the media.

Mr Qarase says he has spoken to the minister for home affairs who is responsible for the military.

He says the matter should only come to him as a last resort and he may have to have a meeting with Commodore Bainimarama to ensure that it is put to rest as soon as possible.
