Forum Secretary General suggests setting up regional courts

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Greg Urwin, has suggested the possibility of setting up regional courts.

Speaking at this year's Attorney General's Conference in Fiji, he said under the Pacific Plan --drawn up to refocus the work of the forum -- there were calls for greater shared effort and the pooling of resources in judicial and public administration processes.

They also suggested the establishment of a regional panel of judges, a common list of Pacific prosecutors as well as a regional financial intelligence unit.

But he said he also wanted to float the idea of a regional "Privy Council" or the formation of specialist regional courts to deal with constitutional or land issues.
