The Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, is hoping to bolster links with other countries in the region at a meeting of Asia Pacific leaders in Chile.

The National newspaper reports Sir Michael as saying the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation meeting this weekend in Santiago will enable him to talk to other leaders about trade and investment liberalisation.

Sir Michael says he hopes to have bilateral discussions with other APEC leaders with a view to further enhancing relations with their economies.

APEC was formed to foster trade and adopt joint economic standards.
