New Zealand announces it will fund new hospital for Niue

3:59 pm on 30 October 2004

The New Zealand Prime Minister says New Zealand will fully fund the construction of a new hospital on Niue.

A deadly cyclone in January destroyed the Lord Liverpool Hospital in Alofi.

Some blood testing and X-rays can be done at a temporary health centre but most patients have to be flown to New Zealand.

Helen Clark, who flew to Niue last night, has told a gathering of government officials and hundreds of community members at the High School that New Zealand will step in.

She hasn't given details on how much money would be spent, and she hopes other countries will help fund medical equipment for the new hospital.
