Academic says Jakarta has no choice but to implement special autonomy in Papua

An Indonesian academic says the new Government has no choice but to fully implement the special autonomy for the province of Papua.

Dr Agus Sumule, a university teacher in Manokwari in Papua, was one of the those asked by Jakarta to draw up the autonomy arrangements, which were passed in 2001, but not put in place.

He says the wide support given to new President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono by Papuans was because of a belief he backs special autonomy as the solution in Papua.

Dr Sumule, in an opinion piece in the Jakarta Post, says it is no exaggeration to say special autonomy is the only remaining option for Indonesia to maintain Papua, peacefully and constitutionally, as an integral part of the country.
