The Fiji prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, is on medication to deal with a coronary condition but has avoided having to undergo surgery.

Local media reports that he returned to the country on the weekend after a successful medical examination in Los Angeles for what appeared to be a narrowing of the blood vessels leading to and from his heart.

Mr Qarase has been advised to take medication and slow down a little.
