American Samoa governor's candidate promises to look at extending citizenship rights

A candidate for Governor in American Samoa, Afoa Moega Lutu, is promising to try and extend citizenship to foreigners who have made the territory their home.

He says, if elected, his Administration will explore the possbility of extending voting rights or United States citizenship to foreign nationals who have had residency for at least 20 years.

His comment came after it was revealed that the Territory had just 16 thousand registered voters among its population of more than 60 thousand.

A governnent official says there is an overwhelming number of Samoan citizens living in the Territory.
