Lawyer says jailed Fiji vice-president need not apologise

9:29 am on 9 October 2004

The lawyer for the jailed Fiji vice president Ratu Jope Seniloli says there is no need for his client to apologise during the current national reconciliation and forgiveness week because he is innocent.

Abhay Singh made the claim to Radio Legend despite Seniloli being jailed for four years after the High Court found him guilty of taking an illegal oath to commit a capital offence.

The conviction was for Seniloli purporting to become the usurper president during the coup while the lawfully appointed Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara still held office.

Abhay Singh says he has met with Seniloli who does not have to reconcile with anyone as he has done nothing wrong.

Seniloli, who is holding on to his vice presidential office and salary from prison, will have his appeal heard next month.
