A human rights activist from the Indonesian province of Papua says alleged abuses go unreported in the world media because foreign journalists cannot report from there.
John Rumbiak of the organisation Elsham says the province is isolated and human rights violations go unreported in the international media.
He says in contrast, the 1991 Dili massacre was witnessed by foreigners.
"and that's how the international community knew about East Timor. West Papua has been isolated since it was annexed. And no access to West Papua of any observers, journalists - even tourists that have to have pass permits to travel to West Papua. Their isolation policy have isolated West Papua from the rest of the world, and this is systematic."
