Central province police in Papau New Guinea are investigating claims that a minister in Government hired men to kill a man suspected of being his wife's lover.

The National newspaper reports police in Port Moresby have confirmed this saying one of its outstations received a complaint in July about the alleged attempt on the man's life.

Police said they did not have enough information then to ask the minister to come in for questioning.

However, they have not closed their file on the matter.

According to information provided to Central police, the minister had hired a vehicle from a car hire company for the armed men to kill the man.

Police said the suspected lover was shot in the left thigh but escaped death when the armed criminals' vehicle overturned while pursuing the man's vehicle at high speed.

A police spokesman says they cannot lay charges because the people laying the complaint against the minister are not responding effectively.
