Tonga considering establishing a diplomatic presence in Beijing

A report from New York says Tonga has voiced support for China at the United Nations.

The news agency UPI reports the Tongan Foreign Minister, Sonatane Tu'a Taumoepeau-Tupou, has told the UN General Assembly that it supports China's views on Taiwan.

The Minister says Tonga recognizes that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

Mr Taumoepeau-Tupou says Tonga recognises that Chinese markets provides trade, commercial investment, tourism and other possibilities.

UPI reports that Tonga has plans to establish a diplomatic presence in Beijing.

Mr Taumoepeau-Tupou has also highlighted Tonga's trade links with Japan and has recommended a permanent seat for Tokyo on the United Nations' Security Council.
