Six Chinese held in Fiji for carrying fake passports

3:48 pm on 27 September 2004

Fiji immigration authorities have arrested six Chinese nationals who tried to leave the country at the weekend with forged passports and visas.

The six had arrived in Fiji a few days earlier carrying proper Chinese passports.

But they tried to board a flight from Nadi to Los Angeles using Japanese passports which had US visas stamped.

An airport check-in employee became suspicious about their travel documents and alerted immigration officials who arrested the three men and three women who are all in their 20s.

A Fiji Sun report says the six claimed they were given the Japanese passports and visas in Suva.

They have been detained at Nadi while investigations continue.

Officials have expressed concern that Fiji is being used as a transit point by people using forged travel papers.
