Solomon's opposition denies funds available for by-elections

7:33 am on 27 September 2004

The opposition leader in Solomon Islands, Francis Billy Hilly, has accused the Minister of Finance, Francis Zama, of misleading Parliament over funds available to hold by-elections.

Mr Billy Hilly said the Finance Minister had categorically told parliament during the midyear meeting that government had already made funds available for elections in Western and Choiseul provinces.

But Mr Billy Hilly told the Solomons Broadcasting Corporation that contrary to what the Minister of Finance had told Parliament, his office had established that no funds have yet been made available for the task.

He said despite having identified sources of funding coming from the Australian Government Budgetary support and the government recurrent budget, the elections cannot be held until December because preparatory work is still required.
