Unionists in New Caledonia argue over wider industrial action

10:19 am on 23 September 2004

A union leader in New Caledonia says unionists aren't likely to heed a call to carry out a territory-wide general strike today.

Carmen Marty, of the U-S-O-E-N-C union says strikers blockading a daily newspaper, are split on whether or not to widen their industrial action.

A manager at the Nouvelles Caledoniennes newspaper, Roland Andrei, says there's a disagreement within the union leadership.

Nevertheless Mr Andrei says he's scared by the union's threats.

"They have announced that they are going to stop all the critical area in New Caledonia; the airport, the petrol station, and all over the country. So it's getting scary, really."
