10 people are reported to have burnt the phone lines of the Papua New Guinea Red Cross before attacking a driver and making off with the Red Cross van.
The van was later recovered but the driver was left with serious injuries.
The Secretary-general of the PNG Red Cross Society, Jacqueline Boga, told the Post Courier newspaper that it was a pity the emblem was not respected as this was the only means of protection afforded to staff.
Ms Boga said as a result of the attack, the organisation was prevented from carrying out its humanitarian mandate for PNG for at least a week.
