PNG despatches troops to border after incursion by Papua rebels

10:22 am on 2 September 2004

Papua New Guinea has deployed troops to its border with Indonesia following reports of clashes between PNG villagers and pro-independence rebels from the Indonesian province of West Papua.

PNG's minister for border affairs Sir Peter Barter said he had received reports of an attack by members of the OPM rebel movement on a PNG citizen near the remote border village of Weam in the country's south.

Sir Peter says a PNG defence force patrol has been deployed to the area to investigate the reports and would remain there for a fortnight.
