UN weather agency plays down El Nino fears

The World Meteorological Organisation has played down fears of an El Nino weather system developing in the central Pacific ocean.

The weather phenomenon has been blamed for creating severe droughts and storms in adjoining regions.

The WMO, an agency of the United Nations, said that unusually warm sea surface conditions in the Meteorological Organisation were countered by unusually cool conditions in the east.

The report doesn't support assertions made by U.S. government forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who expect a weak El Nino pattern to develop by the end of this month.
