Fiji police tighten security for Seniloli bail hearing

4:40 pm on 17 August 2004

Fiji police are to screen all those who want to be at the Appeal court tomorrow to hear the bail application of the vice-president, Ratu Jope Seniloli.

Police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, says they're aware that protests are planned but he says security is being increased and the situation will remain under control.

He says they plan to prevent any repeat of the lawlessness of the 2000 coup.

Mr Hughes says police will be questioning people, they will have to pass through metal detectors, and searches may be held.

"If we have reason to believe that the people who are endeavouring to get into the court, are there with a view to disrupting proceedings, or acting in other ways that are undesirable, then, yes, they will be prevented from entering the precincts of the court, let alone the court itself."

Seniloli and four others jailed in connection with the coup will appear before the court.
