The French Polynesian government says a general strike threatened for this week is illegal.
A spokesman, Jean-Paul Barral, says the proposed stoppage over the way the the social security organisation is run is a political maneuver.
He says the strike is illegal because it is based on false assumptions.
Meanwhile, employees at petrol companies have gone on strike but it's not clear yet when stations are likely to run out of fuel.
