PNG police face charges over prison escape

1:37 pm on 10 August 2004

Four Papua New Guinea policemen face disciplinary charges after eleven remand prisoners broke out of Goroka police jail.

The National newspaper reports that the eleven sawed through the heavy iron bars of the cell undetected by the four officers.

Eastern Highlands Police Commander, Phillip Solala, told the paper the escape follows a similar incident about a month ago when 19 remand prisoners cut through the lock on a cell door at the same prison.

All of them are still at large.
