Nauru faces fuel and food shortages

Nauru says it's facing a fuel and food shortage as the Pacific Islands Forum plans to give it assistance.

The government office in Melbourne says despite the poor financial outlook for Nauru, 120 asylum seekers housed in Australian-run detention on the island are comparatively well-cared for.

The Forum leaders have resolved to help Nauru which is faced with huge debts.

A spokeswoman for the Nauru government, Helen Bogdan, says islanders are now feeling the pinch:

"The people of Nauru have not had a supply of financial assistance, more recently, and they are finding it very hard to get fuel and food, and many people haven't been paid."

Miss Bogdan says in some cases fuel has already run out.
