Fiji MP says premier connived to remove military head

A senior Fiji Labour Party MP has accused the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, of having the military commander next on his hit list.

Poseci Bune has told parliament that from the beginning of the formation of his government, Mr Qarase, "with the support of his chief executive, Jioji Kotobalavu, had plotted and connived to remove Commodore Bainimarama from his position."

Mr Bune said this was because Commodore Bainimarama "had wanted the rule of law to be completely enforced in the military to clean up that institution."

He said following the "dishonorable and shameful removal" of the former chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, he believed Mr Qarase's next target would be Commodore Bainimarama, a good friend of Ratu Epeli.

It was Ratu Epeli who on leaving command of the army in 1999, had brought Commodore Bainimarama from the navy and appointed him military commander ahead of army officers who were aspiring for the position.
