Fiji government says Labour MP is irresponsible for making allegations

4:47 pm on 4 August 2004

The Fiji government is calling a Labour MP irresponsible for making allegations that the prime minister had prior knowledge of the 2000 coup.

The information minister, Simione Kaitani, says Poseci Bune, should go to the police instead of claiming in parliament that the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, not only knew about the coup but also assisted in the removal of the president.

Mr Kaitani says these sorts of wild allegations do nothing for the current negotiations between the two parties over the multi-party cabinet.

"It was a very, very cheap shot by Bune. These are the kinds of things that continues to affect the need for co-operation and the kind of wild allegations, speculation by Bune. It has not helped at all. For such allegations, you know, the police are there."

Mr Kaitani says the best avenue would have been to go to the authorities, in this case, the police, and inform them.

Mr Bune was unavailable for comment.
