New Caledonia strikers shut down broadcasts

3:16 pm on 3 August 2004

Striking workers in New Caledonia have blocked radio and television transmissions.

The escalation in industrial action that's seen roads, ports and the airport blockaded, comes as negotiators keep up talks.

A spokesperson for the Union of Kanak and Exploited workers, Pierre Chauvat, says radio and TV has been off air since early today.

"Since last night midnight the radio and television station were blocked by the strikers and the union. So there's no more coverage of TV and radio."

Mr Chauvat says negotiations will continue today without a break until an agreement is reached.

The union called action because it's afraid of job cuts at a local stevedoring company.
